I never realized this until I parked next to one the other day but.
The new 4runner is pretty much the same size as my land cruiser. Granted mine is lifted, on bigger tires and has a roof rack...but take another look
And looking into it...yes, they are pretty damn close.
The cruiser is taller and has more clearance but the 4Runner is an inch longer, fractionally narrower and only 100 lbs lighter.
Sadly the interior dimensions are where the new truck are let down. The 4runner is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller inside than the cruiser. On the plus side, the 4runner has more power, more transmission gears and WAY better mileage. Plus with KDDS, a rear locker, and crawl control I'm willing to bet they are pretty evenly matched off road (stock locked 80 vs stock trail 4Runner)
Model bloat? or Progress?

I saw a sweet 2014 4Runner this morning. Dark grey with those sweet darker tail lights and I think TRD wheels on BFG's. So much want!!! Too much dinero but that damn thing is tank!

Did everyone park over the line?

To be fair, Its pretty damn tempting of a truck. More power, greater fuel economy, better towing (performance not weight) and nearly as capable off road. On the other hand...many monies.

It amazes me how the 4Runner continues to grow on the outside, yet remain cramped on the inside. It's like the anti-TARDIS.

started with a leaf, then something else, then the 4runner and I got the short end of the stick.

Model bloat pisses me off. I get the reasoning behind it, but I still don't like it. And when your cars keep increasing in size, you and up potentially backing yourself into a corner, like BMW did with the 1 Series. There's no reason why my wife's 2010 Corolla should be bigger than a Camry from 15 years ago. Hell, when shes in the market for a new car on a few years she'll probably end up with whatever is slotted below the Yaris/Fit in their respective lineups. If people bought the car, they obviously like the car. Why continue making them bigger? Not everyone wants that.

Also, the most annoying thing about the 4Runner, is the seats are practically on the floor like a sports car. It's disconcerting to sit up that high yet have the driving position of something that should be much closer to the ground.
Compare that with a WJ Grand Cherokee, where you have thicker seats with a more upright seating position, yet still manage to have plenty of headroom.
I dunno, it's harder to tell in this pics than what I mean.
But yeah, 4Runner = sitting on the floor.

Since the 3rd gen 4Runner was the first one with a dedicated platform separate from the pickups, here's the evolution of its size over time.
And yet on the inside...not much has changed. Except the 3rd gen was a lot narrower of a vehicle overall, and yet the rear legroom keeps shrinking (perhaps to make room for the worthless-in-a-4Runner optional 3rd row).

I know what you mean, All toyota trucks do that, and for two good reasons:
1. it raises the body up to avoid damage
2. it shortens the seat brackets so they don't get bend over years of rough road abuse.
in regards to #2 its 100% confirmed that is why they do it (at least on the land cruiser)

Over an inch of additional clearance is a big deal offroad. Not to be a FJ80 elitist but I think the 3 lockers and the added ground clearance make it better offroad by a decent margin.
Very interesting comparo though.

You'll like this then. Land cruiser wagons though the years. Best info I could find. I was going to do a separate post on it but then I realized maybe 4 people care.

I don't mind it in the 1st gen Tacoma since that's a much more compact vehicle than the 4th & 5th gen 4Runners.
Also my experience with Land Cruisers (80 and 100) is that their seats are at least at a reasonable height, if perhaps still a little low.
The 4th & 5th gen 4Runners exaggerate the problem because the seats are mounted low, but the cowl is high up, which makes for a tall dash that you look up and over, and a smaller windshield.
